Knowing the real you
Almost everybody has something, which we do not like in our selves. It may be a physical attribute or a trait, which is uncontrollable, or a certain kind of personality. A lot of people are not aware of the things, which other people do not like in them. One would just be surprised that some people avoid them or that some people always ask them for favors which they cannot refuse.
It is these things, which may someday awaken us to something, which we need to strengthen or improve within ourselves. When the time comes that we feel compelled to change, something in ourselves seems to be missing in ourselves, and that is self-awareness.
When people become self aware, they start to analyze the things they do and things which happen to them. This is the first step to self-development, being aware that something is amiss and feeling the need to correct or improve it. This is an important step because this will chart the way to self-development.
An important thing to do when trying to develop one’s self is to take a look at your self from a different point of view. This process may take time and it may need the help of other people. The best way to gain a different perspective of your self is to ask other people. This is best done with people you are comfortable with since there may be criticism, which might be insulting when coming from a stranger.
One can glean how people feel about you through their attitude towards you. If you are treated disparagingly, this could mean that you are not so important in their point of view. If they fear you or avoid you then you may be overbearing or obnoxious. Friends may tell the truth when prompted so it would be best to keep an open mind and to think about the good this exercise may bring to you instead of being irritated or insulted by what they have to say.
With the above exercise done with, another way for self-development is to improve one’s physical health. Being in the pink of health would change not only the physical side of life but also mental alertness and mental health. A healthy body and a healthy brain go hand in hand. Exercising the brain could contribute to a better physical state. Thinking negative thoughts and getting too affected or depressed by bad news affects the body.
Depression can make an individual lose much needed sleep. Lost sleep is a factor to poor mental stability and mental alertness. Fatigue due to little rest or too much physical and mental pressure can contribute to a breakdown. A physical breakdown could mean that the brain is also affected and vice versa. Mental breakdown could be attributed to poor health and lack of rest or sleep.
Resting and sleeping are the body’s ways of recuperating. Too much of these may also lead to an unhealthy lifestyle. A sedentary lifestyle is not good for one’s self. It could lead to being fat, and being fat could lead to insecurity and self-doubt. Self-doubt contributes to losing one’s ability to make decisions and choices.
Making choices is a part of everyday life. We make a choice whether to put butter or cheese on our bread and we make a choice which school to go to after high school. Some people cannot choose even the smallest things. They will need the input of someone else to be able to reach a decision. Some will also swing from one choice to another until the very last minute. This shows lack of confidence in one’s decision-making ability.
The awareness that there is a lack of confidence is already a step up in the self-development ladder. One would just have to motivate and encourage one’s self to be able to gain confidence.
